What is an Operations or Departmental Manager?
An operations or departmental manager is someone who manages teams and/or projects, and is responsible for achieving operational or departmental goals and objectives, as part of the delivery of the organisations strategy. They are accountable to a more senior manager or business owner. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities and job titles will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same. Key responsibilities may include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.
Who is it suitable for?
This is suitable for managers or senior managers who want to concentrate on the managerial and operational side of the sector. It is suitable for managers who want to develop in their role, or who want to progress to senior management positions in the future.
It is a qualification that is transferrable to all sectors.
What does the training involve?
Your training will help you to develop the occupational standard’s knowledge, skills and behaviours through blended learning which will involve:
Training sessions at our training centre;
Coaching and training in the workplace;
Remote sessions held online;
Assignments and tasks which you carry out as off the job training;
Observation, assessment and feedback from your assessor(s);
Compiling a portfolio of evidence to show that you are working at, or above, the occupational standard.
Length of course: 2 ½ years
Assessment:
Achievement is dependent on an end point assessment that is carried out by an external assessor. The assessment includes:
- Project proposal, presentation and questioning
- Professional discussion underpinned by the Portfolio of Evidence
You will be fully supported in your preparation for this end point assessment.
Entry requirements:
Maths and English at level 2 or equivalent.

Working in a management role.
