Level 2 Qualifications

Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce

This qualification can be the first step in your Early Years career. It is suitable for those working under supervision with children, young people (aged 0-16 years) and families. It enables you to work as a nursery assistant.

It is delivered through work based learning and assessment, and usually takes 12 months to complete, and consists of optional and compulsory units.

Candidates will be allocated to an assessor, who will visit them at their settings. Candidates learn "on-the-job" and, if necessary, we also support work based mentors. There is no requirement to attend additional classes, although we do run regular workshops that candidates may find useful.

This is a compulsory qualification in our apprenticeship programme, and is offered as a stand alone qualification to those who are not eligible for the apprenticeship scheme.

Entry requirements for level 2 courses: Candidates should be employed in a relevant childcare setting working under supervision in a face-to-face role with children, young people (aged 0-16 years) and families. Candidates should have, or be working towards, Level-1 English and maths. We can provide support in achieving these qualifications. If you are not currently employed, but are eligible for our apprenticeship programme, we may be able to offer a work placement - please contact us for details.

Progression: Level 2 qualifications for the Children and Young People's Workforce are suitable for those who want to work as nursery assistants, playworker assistants, creche, pre-school or playgroup assistants, toy library workers, homestart workers, mother's helps, babysitters or au pairs. They are a valuable first step in building a career in Early Years. Once you have completed a level 2 qualification, you can progress to a level 3 course, equivalent to a diploma or A-levels, which is a requirement for nursery nurses and playworkers and many other early years careers.
